£280,000 Surfacing Improvements, A85 at Lochawe

First phase of project to begin on Monday 1 October for five days

Overnight road closures required for safety during second phase of improvements from Sunday 14 October for five nights, 7pm – 7am

Motorists using the A85 through Lochawe are to benefit from an improved road surface as £280,000 worth of resurfacing works are to be carried out starting next week.

The works will to be split into two phases on a section of the A85 at Lochawe and will involve resurfacing the road to provide a safer and smoother road for road users.

Phase One will begin on Monday 1 October and is expected to take five days to complete. The upgrade will be carried out between 7am and 7pm each day. The road will remain open, however due to the limited road width on this section, temporary traffic lights and a convoy traffic management system will be in place to ensure the safety of road workers and motorists.

The second phase of the resurfacing will begin on Sunday 14 October and is expected to take five nights to complete, finishing on the morning of Friday 19 October. The works will be carried out between 7pm and 7am each night as this section of the A85 will be closed due to the narrower width of the road in this phase for the safety of the workforce and road users.

There will be a signed diversion route in place via the A828 and A82. However, this diversion route is subject to a height restriction of 13’9” (4.2m) at Connell Bridge and vehicles higher than this restriction are encouraged to plan an alternative route during the overnight works. Alternatively, all vehicles will be held at the work site until able to pass through the works during short amnesty periods at approximately 8:30pm, 10pm, 12am, 2am and 4am.

Eddie Ross, BEAR Scotland’s North West Representative said: “These essential resurfacing works will upgrade the existing road surface, greatly improving the safety and quality for road users.

“The traffic management arrangements are necessary to keep everyone safe during the improvements, however we’ve arranged for the project to be split into two phases so that we can keep the road open wherever possible during the works, and are only closing the road overnight to further limit the impact to road users.

“Our teams will do all they can to complete the project as quickly and safely as possible.

“We thank motorists for their patience in advance and would also encourage them to plan ahead before setting out by checking the Traffic Scotland website for up to date travel information.”

These road improvements near Lochawe are part of a wider £24M programme of surfacing improvements across over 200 locations on the North West trunk road network for 2018.  A full programme of the surfacing repairs is available to download from the BEAR Scotland website at, and an interactive map of the upcoming improvements is available at
