TUESDAY 5 February

Ongoing £560K improvements on A90 North of Finavon to Nether Careston continue this week after being delayed by inclement weather

  • Further £450K project to begin Monday 11 February to address A90 from Nether Careston to Mains of Careston

Road improvements on the A90 north of Finavon to Nether Careston are continuing this week after cold temperatures and inclement weather prevented the project from being completed last week.

The £560,000 project involves surfacing a 2km section of the route which will create a smoother and safer journey for motorists.

Once the surfacing improvements are completed on the A90 north of Finavon to Nether Careston, a further £450,000 project will begin on another section of the route just 700m further north of the current improvements, which will address around 2km of the carriageway.  These works are expected to begin on Monday 11 February for ten nights and will address the northbound A90 from Nether Careston to Mains of Careston.  Works will take place between 7.30pm and 6.30am each night with no works taking place on Friday or Saturday nights. The project is expected to be completed by 6.30am Friday 22 February.

To ensure the safety of road workers and motorists there will be a 10mph convoy system in place each night during working hours at both projects.  Due to the nature of the works involved, a lane closure will remain in place 24 hours a day.  The southbound A90 will be unaffected by the project.

Residents and stakeholders have been kept informed of the delays to the A90 north of Finavon scheme and have been consulted about the next A90 resurfacing works on the A90 Nether Careston to Mains of Careston to make them aware of the traffic management arrangements and to minimise any inconvenience.

Andy Thompson, BEAR Scotland’s North East Unit Representative, said: “Our teams have done all they can to complete these surfacing improvements on the A90 north of Finavon however unfortunately the cold temperatures and inclement weather conditions we experienced last week prevented them from completing the surfacing improvements as planned.

“This week teams will continue with the improvements and once these are completed will begin work on the next surfacing project on the A90 Nether Careston to Mains of Careston.

“These projects will greatly improve and strengthen these sections of the A90, helping to create a smoother and safer journey for motorists.

“We thank motorists for their patience in advance while our teams carry out these works on the A90. We encourage motorists to plan their journeys in advance and allow some extra time to reach their destination.”

Materials removed from the existing carriageway will be recycled using SEPA approved methods.

A section of the northbound A90 north of Finavon to Nether Careston is set to benefit from carriageway resurfacing improvements worth £560,000 starting on Sunday night.

The investment from Transport Scotland will see resurfacing improvements and carriageway strengthening works across almost 2km of the northbound A90 ensuring that this section of the route continues to operate safely for years to come.

The overnight project is scheduled to start on Sunday 20 January and is expected to take nine nights to complete. Works will take place between 7.30pm and 6.30am each night with no works taking place on Friday or Saturday nights. The project is expected to be completed by 6.30am Thursday 31 January.

The southbound A90 will be unaffected by the project.

The two laybys within the scheme extents will also be resurfaced and will be closed for safety during the project.

Consultation has taken place with residents and stakeholders in advance of the resurfacing works to make them aware of the traffic management arrangements and to minimise any inconvenience.

Commenting on the improvements, Andy Thompson, BEAR Scotland’s North East Unit Representative, said: “This £560,000 investment from Transport Scotland will greatly improve and strengthen this busy section of the A90, as well as create a smoother and safer journey for motorists.

“We’ve taken steps to minimise disruption for motorists as much as possible during the improvements, including carrying out the works overnight and removing all traffic management during the weekends to further limit any impact to motorists.

“We thank motorists for their patience in advance while our teams carry out these works on the A90. We encourage motorists to plan their journeys in advance by checking the Traffic Scotland website for up to date traffic information.”
