Green light for project to carry out £150,000 overnight surfacing improvements in Oban 

Project will involve resurfacing, street lighting maintenance and manhole cover repairs

Overnight work set to begin from Friday 1 November for two weeks, 8pm – 6am

 

A project to carry out £150,000 improvements to a stretch of George Street in Oban has been given the green light following a successful consultation with the local community.

The £150,000 project will see a 340m stretch of carriageway resurfaced to create a smoother and safer journey for road users, along with various utility access manhole covers replaced to reduce any noise from passing vehicles.   Street lighting maintenance will also take place on Dunollie Road to ensure the current system continues to operate efficiently.  

The project will take place from Friday 1 November for two weeks, 8pm to 6am, excluding Friday 8 and Saturday 9 November.  To minimise disruption for attendees during the Oban Bay Fireworks Display on Tuesday 5 November the works will start at 9:30pm.

Due to the busy nature of this section of the road and the network restrictions through Oban, the project has to take place overnight.  Efforts will be made to ensure any noise is kept to a minimum throughout the project, with the nosiest operations, such as removing the worn-out road surface, taking place before 11pm each night.  

The A85 will remain open throughout the project however various traffic management arrangements will be in place between the Dunollie Road/Deanary Brae Junction and Argyll Square Roundabout to allow work to take place safely each night.   A 10mph convoy system will be in place during working hours to safely escort motorists through the work zone, with the location changing as the programme progresses.  Motorists are encouraged to follow all traffic management signs or temporary restrictions which will be erected in advance.

Various parking restrictions will also be in place along George Street and Corran Esplanade to allow teams to safely complete the project.  Access for pedestrians will be maintained throughout the project. 

BEAR Scotland has carried out consultation with local businesses and other key stakeholders to inform of the project in advance and take onboard any feedback ahead of the project taking place.  Advanced signage has also been erected to inform the local community.

Eddie Ross, BEAR Scotland’s North West Representative said: “This £150,000 project for George Street in Oban has been planned to avoid impacting motorists, residents and visitors in the town as much as possible.  

“We’ve taken steps to minimise disruption by arranging for the project to take place overnight and ensuring that all noisy operations, will be completed before 11pm each night.  

 “The road surfacing project is essential to upgrade the carriageway, however, we want to assure residents and business owners that we will be doing everything possible to ensure disruption is kept to a minimum during this project.  

“Our project has been planned to take place outwith the busier summer months and before the cold winter weather sets in, and we’ve arranged to start improvements later in the evening on Bonfire Night to avoid impacting road users.

“We strongly advise all road users in Oban to follow the traffic management and temporary signs which will be in place each night of the project and encourage them to plan their journeys in advance by checking the Traffic Scotland website for up to date journey information.

“We thank all residents, businesses and road users for their patience in advance while we complete this essential project.”
