Seawall repairs for A82 Achintore Road, Fort William

A project to carry out essential coastal defence repairs on the A82 at Achintore Road, Fort William, is set to get underway next week.

Following several storm events in recent months, a large void has established in the existing sea wall. This breach has allowed sea water to undermine the embankment and has resulted in a significant slip of this material.

Teams are planning to repair the sea wall to ensure it continues to function safely for road users.  Repairs are programmed to take place on Monday 23 March for five days to complete.

To ensure safe access to the site can be maintained, temporary traffic lights will be installed on the A82 for five days between 7am and 7pm.  The traffic lights will be removed outwith working hours to keep any disruption to a minimum.  A small section of the West End car park will also be closed to the public.

Eddie Ross, BEAR Scotland’s North West Representative, said: “This essential repair project will allow our teams to address a section of the seawall which was damaged following storms experienced in February, ensuring the coastal defence system continues to function safely.

“Temporary traffic lights will be in place for safety during the repairs however every effort will be made to ensure disruption is kept to a minimum.

“We encourage all road users to plan their journeys in advance by checking the Traffic Scotland website for up to date journey information.”

Real-time journey information is available from Traffic  Scotland on, twitter at @trafficscotland or the new mobile site
